How Online Counselling Works: A Step-by-Step Guide

Online counselling can connect you with a qualified therapist from home.

Here’s a step-by-step guide about how it works:

  1. Research Your Counsellor. Start by looking at our Meet Our Team page. Check the qualifications of our therapists and their schedule availability to find the best fit for you. We have counsellors who are available daytime, evening and weekends.

  2. Create an Account: Choose a counsellor and create an account on our Jane booking system. This involves entering some basic information.

  3. Schedule a Session: After setting up your account, you can go ahead and book a session. Select a location (Fairfield Psychology or Oak Bay Psychology), then select a date and time.

  4. Prepare for Your Session: Find a quiet, private space where you can talk openly. Make sure your device is charged and that you have a stable Internet connection.

  5. Join the Session: You will receive an automatic email from our Jane booking platform 30 minutes prior to your appointment time. This email will have a direct link to our online telehealth portal. If you don’t receive this email, you can login to your Jane account and access your session that way.

At your scheduled time, join the video call. Your counsellor will grant you access to the session for you to get started.

  6. Follow Up: After the session, your counsellor may give you resources or strategies to support your progress. You can schedule future sessions either through your therapist directly or through our online booking system.

Online Counselling vs. In-Person Therapy: Which is Right for You?

When it comes to mental health support, there are two main options: online counselling and in-person therapy.

Each has its own set of benefits that cater to different needs and lifestyles. Here’s how they compare:

ONLINE COUNSELLING

  • Convenience: Access sessions from anywhere. No commuting means you can fit therapy into your schedule easily.

  • Flexibility: Choose session times that work for you, making it easier to maintain consistency.

  • Comfort: Engage in therapy from a familiar space, which can make it easier to open up.

  • Wider access: Connect with specialists who may not be available locally, expanding your options for care.

IN-PERSON THERAPY

  • Personal interaction: Many find that face-to-face meetings build stronger connections with their therapist.

  • Immediate feedback: Non-verbal cues can enhance understanding, allowing for deeper engagement in discussions.

  • Structured setting: Being in a dedicated therapy space can help you focus and commit to the process.

Which is right for you?

Consider your comfort level, preferences, personality, and what you hope to achieve.

Some people thrive with online sessions, while others prefer the personal touch of in-person therapy.

You may even find a combination of both works best for you!
